The Flying: A Handwritten Brush Font for Creative Brands

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to figure out how to give a new café identity a sense of warmth and personality. The client wanted something that felt approachable, not too formal, but still polished enough for a modern eatery. That’s when I pulled out The Flying, a handwritten brush font with a youthful spirit that had been sitting in my font library for a while.

A Font with a Personality

The Flying isn’t just a typeface—it feels like it has a story to tell. Its flowing strokes and soft curves give it a handcrafted, almost playful vibe. The charming ligatures add a subtle touch of elegance, making it feel both modern and timeless. It’s the kind of font that can make a logo feel more personal, like it was drawn by someone who cares about the message they’re sending.

When I first tested it on a logo concept, I was struck by how it balanced creativity with legibility. It wasn’t overly ornate, which is a relief because sometimes handwritten fonts can be hard to read at smaller sizes. But here, the structure holds up well, even in short phrases or headings.

Real-World Testing: From Logo to Social Media

I used The Flying on a logo draft, a brand board, packaging mockups, business cards, website headers, and social media layouts. In each case, it brought a sense of authenticity and energy. On a café menu, it added a friendly, inviting tone. On a product label, it made the brand feel more artisanal and intentional.

On a website header, it stood out without being overwhelming. Paired with a clean sans serif for body text, it created a nice contrast that kept the design from feeling too busy. In social media graphics, it worked well as a headline font, drawing attention without sacrificing readability.

One thing I noticed was how The Flying responded to different weights and styles. The brush-like strokes gave it a dynamic feel, and the included alternates and swashes allowed for some creative variation without losing the font’s core character.

When to Use It and When Not To

The Flying shines in projects that benefit from a personal, creative touch. It’s perfect for logos, headlines, branding materials, and any design that needs a human element. It works especially well for boutique brands, cafes, skincare products, handmade shops, and local restaurants looking to stand out with a unique visual identity.

However, it’s not the best choice for long blocks of text or formal corporate use. At smaller sizes or in dense paragraphs, it can become harder to read. For those situations, a more structured font would be better suited.

It also doesn’t work as well in high-stakes commercial designs where precision and clarity are paramount. If the goal is to project professionalism and authority, The Flying might not be the right fit. But for brands that want to feel more relatable and expressive, it’s a strong option.

Pairing and Practical Tips

When pairing The Flying with other fonts, a clean serif or sans serif often does the trick. A bold serif can add contrast and sophistication, while a simple sans serif keeps things modern and readable. For a more cohesive look, pairing it with another script or handwritten font can create a layered, textured effect.

Before using The Flying in final client work, I always recommend testing it across different mediums—print, digital, and signage. Make sure it looks good in all contexts, especially if it’s going to be used on a shop sign or product packaging. Also, check the multilingual support and file formats to ensure compatibility with your workflow.

Don’t forget to review the licensing terms. The Flying is a premium font, so it’s important to confirm that it’s licensed for commercial use if you’re planning to apply it to client projects, merchandise, or print-on-demand products.

Final Thoughts on The Flying

As a designer, I’ve seen many fonts come and go, but The Flying stands out for its balance of charm and usability. It’s not just a pretty font—it’s a tool that can help shape a brand’s voice and personality. Whether you’re working on a café refresh, a skincare line, or a handmade shop, it adds a layer of creativity that’s hard to replicate with more rigid typefaces.

It’s not perfect for every project, but when used correctly, The Flying can elevate a design from good to memorable. And that’s what great typography should do—support the message and enhance the experience.
